Making the Book

Back

We created a variety of different book covers and used our friends and family to critique and refine our designs. We then put our favourite two on our Year 3 Facebook page, where we asked people to vote. We then further refined our ideas from the comments made to create our book cover.

Stage 5

Stage 6

We took our initial pages to Duncan (our university lecturer) where he suggested we had the book looked at by a graphic designer. Having found out the going rate for a graphic designer (£55 per hour), one of the group members contacted an acquaintance to assist us. She was really helpful and made both useful and manageable adjustments.

The theme colours for each page / motif running through the book was decided. We discussed which sections to have in colour, and agreed on the colours they would be throughout the book. Gee and Matt then resumed the process of editing and reformatting. In total the book editing took a considerable amount of concentrated work.

Stage 7

The book arrived and to our dismay the publisher had not stated where the ISBN number would be placed (see photo). So we had to send off for a new copy. This enabled us to carry out further proof reading and correct minor errors.

Final completion

Whilst making this book our interpersonal skills have been enhanced. This is because we all had different ideas on how the book should be. Therefore, we had to listen to each other’s ideas, and learn to compromise.

Making the book developed our organisational skills. This involved a lot of planning, and needed all group members to stay on top of their workload, so that the book could be put together by the date we planned.

As we were sending the book off for publishing we had to account for the processing and shipping time. This meant everyone had to step up to the challenge and become really focused.
