I would recommend getting the user guide for most programs as a reference read, but it is possible to work without them.

Use the help on the tool-bar for information and also review the on line video tutorials for each of the software packages yo intend to use. Some of the videos will be for later versions of the program but you can usually see what you are trying to do.
